Delta Has Canceled Thousands Of Flights And Everyone Is In Hell

Delta has canceled about 3,000 flights this week, after bad weather at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport — the world's busiest airport — led to a domino effect across the country.

Tired, angry, and desperate passengers remained stranded at airports on Friday. After Delta's home hub in Atlanta was thrown into chaos, the company's "recovery has not been ideal and we apologize for that," said Delta's Chief Operating Officer Gil West in a statement on Thursday. Making matters worse, "Heavy spring break travel means open seats are very limited for rebooking," the airline said Friday morning.

Atlanta was hit by severe thunderstorms, flash floods, and hail on Wednesday. About 1,000 flights were canceled that day, another 900 on Thursday, and about 200 as of Friday morning, reported the Atlanta Business Chronicle, citing data from FlightAware.com. Problems in Atlanta impacted Delta flights at other airports.

Systemwide, "cancelations related to weather and subsequent crew and aircraft positioning total approximately 3,000 this week," Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant told BuzzFeed News. "Delta continues to position aircraft and flight crews Friday following the impact of severe weather in Atlanta, the mid-Atlantic region and the Northeast this week."

West, Delta's operations chief, explained in his statement how a day of bad weather can become a multi-day logistical nightmare.

"When Delta doesn’t fly aircraft, not only do customers not get to their destination, but flight crews don’t get to where they are scheduled to be," he said. "When this happens, unfortunately, further delays and cancellations result. And flight crews can only be on duty for a limited time before rest periods are required by law."

Delta is offering customers refunds if their flight is canceled and they do not travel, and will waive change fees for customers.

Meanwhile, Delta crew members also report being stranded in airport lounges far from their home cities as the airline works through a massive scheduling backlog for employees.

The Author Of “Thirteen Reasons Why” Defends Those Graphic Rape Scenes

Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

Beth Dubber / Beth Dubber/Netflix

It’s been 10 years since Jay Asher’s first novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, made its debut. The book, which became a bestseller, tells the story of a high schooler, Hannah Baker, who kills herself and leaves behind a box of 13 cassette tapes that detail the reasons for her suicide and call out the people she holds responsible.

And just like the novel it’s based on, the TV adaptation, which debuted on Netflix last week, does not shy away from depicting suicide and rape in a raw and graphic way.

“It’s uncomfortable, but that’s OK,” Asher told BuzzFeed News. "It needs to be."

Slut-shaming, harassment, and sexual assault are central to Asher’s story, most notably for Hannah (Katherine Langford) and her former friend Jessica (Alisha Boe). In one scene, Jessica’s boyfriend, Justin (Brandon Flynn), leaves her on her bed during a party because she’s too drunk to have sex. Bryce (Justin Prentice), a popular jock, walks in before Hannah, who inadvertently wound up in the room, can slip out. She jumps into a closet, freezes, and watches through slits in the door as Bryce unbuckles his belt, moves Jessica’s barely conscious body closer to the edge of the bed, pulls down her underwear, and thrusts himself into her. Throughout 13 Reasons Why (styled with a numeral for TV), versions of the scene are repetitively shown from the perspectives of different characters.

The book cover for Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

Penguin Books

In Episode 12, Hannah unintentionally ends up at a party at Bryce’s house, and she finds herself alone in a hot tub with him. In a graphic scene, viewers watch Hannah physically resist Bryce as he approaches her. He pins her against the edge of the hot tub, pulls down her underwear, and pushes her head against the patio. The camera zooms in on her face and hands as her body becomes completely limp and her eyes glaze over while Bryce rapes her.

“I know some of you listening might think there was more I could’ve done or should’ve done,” Hannah says on one of the tapes. “But I’d lost control. And in that moment it felt like...it felt like I was already dead.”

Asher thinks it was “the best decision” to portray the sexual assaults in 13 Reasons Why as authentically as possible.

“Some people said it was too graphic, but it’s a graphic thing,” Asher said. “It’s like they’re saying it’s never appropriate to show it. And then if you’re saying it’s never appropriate to show it, then you’re saying it’s something to be hidden.

“If we’re doing this, it can’t be something that you can look away from or just gloss over in your mind,” he continued. “You have to be uncomfortable when you’re watching it; otherwise you’re not in her mind. In a way, it’s disrespectful if we say, 'We know this stuff is happening, but we don’t want to be made uncomfortable by it.'”

When Asher originally wrote the scene in which Bryce rapes Hannah, he specifically had high school boys in mind as part of his audience.

“I wanted guys to be uncomfortable when they read it, and both the book and the TV show made a point of noting that Hannah never says no,” he said. “Because that’s what we always hear, right? ‘When a girl says no, she means no.’ But there are plenty of times when a girl’s afraid to say no for various reasons, and it doesn’t mean, ‘Oh, as long as they don’t say no, then everything’s fair game.’ You need to be a better person than that.”

Asher on the set of 13 Reasons Why.

Beth Dubber / Beth Dubber/Netflix

Asher said he went back and forth with his publishing house over concerns that including graphic rape scenes would possibly lead to censorship, or the book to be banned, or for it to not be stocked in schools and libraries.

“I think what my publisher said was, ‘If you’re not uncomfortable when you’re reading that scene, then you’re not understanding what’s happening and you’re not going to be forced to grapple with it,’” he recalled.

And when it comes to how those scenes were shot for the Netflix series, Asher feels the same way: The vividness of these moments and their focus on the victim allows those who do relate to Hannah to feel seen.

“I’ve heard from so many people who identify with Hannah’s character and they’re like, ‘Wow, I’ve felt that way, I’ve had this happen,’” Asher said. “There’s this stress that is relieved when you realize somebody understands, and that’s only going to happen if you feel the person who’s writing the book or the people in the TV show aren’t holding back.”

New Details Emerge In The Case Of The Boy Who Killed Himself After His Girlfriend's Alleged Fake Death

The prosecuting attorney said the teenage girl has been charged so “others are on notice” that reckless behavior on social media is not acceptable.

An 11-year-old Michigan boy hanged himself hours after his 13-year-old girlfriend allegedly "hoaxed" him with news of her own death, a local prosecutor told BuzzFeed News, revealing new details about the social media prank that led to the boy's death.

An 11-year-old Michigan boy hanged himself hours after his 13-year-old girlfriend allegedly "hoaxed" him with news of her own death, a local prosecutor told BuzzFeed News, revealing new details about the social media prank that led to the boy's death.

Facebook

Tysen Benz died in a hospital Tuesday after he tried to end his life on March 14. His mother, Katrina Goss, publicly alleged that her son's suicide was a response to his girlfriend faking her own death on social media.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News on Friday, Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Wiese said he "doesn't disagree" with Goss's allegations.

Wiese said that the teenage girl allegedly sent Benz a text message faking her own death. The "hoax" occurred "a couple of hours before" Benz attempted to kill himself, according to Wiese.

"I can speculate that this was apparently upsetting to Tysen," Wiese said.

Police found Benz unresponsive at home and transported him to a hospital where he died of his injuries days later.

"I don't know how it impacted him," Wiese said. "The logical assumption is that it impacted him."

Goss, the boy's mother, told BuzzFeed News that she believed the girl was "solely responsible for his suicide death."

The teenage girl, who has not been identified because of her juvenile status, was charged with maliciously using a computer or telecommunications service to commit a crime. Under Michigan state law, making a false report of a death through a telecommunication device is a misdemeanor with a six-month sentence. Using a computer to commit a crime carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

Benz, a student at Bothwell Middle School, began secretly dating the 13-year-old girl after he bought a cell phone without his mother's knowledge, Goss said.

"He was the happiest, most joyous child until he met her," Goss told BuzzFeed News. "She was mean to him, controlled him, and took advantage of him, even after I repeatedly told her to leave him alone."

Goss said that their relationship went on for about five to six months, but that she was "100% against it" due to their age difference.

Avery Mitchell, who was friends with Benz and the teenage girl, told BuzzFeed News that the girl was playing a prank to see if Benz "really loved her and he took it the wrong way."

"She didn't mean to hurt him [because] they loved each other," Mitchell said through Facebook messages.

Prosecuting Attorney Wiese said that the 13-year-old girl was not being charged in order to be held responsible for Benz's death, but rather for "making reckless comments" on social media and for "irresponsible" behavior.

Prosecuting Attorney Wiese said that the 13-year-old girl was not being charged in order to be held responsible for Benz's death, but rather for "making reckless comments" on social media and for "irresponsible" behavior.

"We're talking about 13-year-old and 11-year-old children," Wiese said. "I don't believe they realized the gravity of what they were doing. The 13-year-old needs to understand that this [behavior] is not appropriate."

Responding to people who have criticized the decision to charge the teen over Benz's suicide, Wiese said that she was charged so "others are on notice" that "this terrible, tragic thing can happen when you're reckless with social media."

"What happens in the digital and social media world also impacts the actual world we live in," Wiese said. "Reckless comments that rise to the level of criminal behavior need to be put out there so there's accountability."

He also advised parents to talk to their children about engaging with social media. "It's a private world they enter and parents don't know what's going on," he said.

Bridges said passengers were allowed to board the flight but were later told four people would need to give up their seats for four United employees who were needed in Louisville on Monday.

She said no passengers volunteered, so a manager came aboard and said passengers would be randomly selected and asked to leave.

A manager then told him security would be called if he refused to leave the plane. Three security guards then removed him from his seat while other passengers yelled in disgust.

While reading out a breaking news report of a car accident during Saturday morning's live broadcast, Kaur realized that one of the victims was her husband but managed to keep her composure during the entire segment.

Kaur broke news of the highway accident in which three people died and two were severely injured. At the time, she was unaware that her husband was one of the victims, according to IBC24.

She then spoke to a local reporter on the phone who provided more details about the accident.

Although the reporter did not identify the victims, the details of the accident —such as the type of car and the location of the crash — made Kaur realize that her husband was involved.

The production team had also just found out about her husband's death while she was reading the news, but "did not have the courage" to tell her, an editor told the Hindustan Times. Another editor said they could not tell her as she was on live television.

Even after realizing her husband was one of the victims, Kaur continued to report on the story and finish the live news segment, IBC24 said.

Once the cameras were off, Kaur finally broke down and began to call her relatives, according to her coworkers.

She then left for the site of the accident.
